Carefully easing travel restrictions for Australians stuck in New Zealand would free up capacity in the strained hotel quarantine system and build momentum for a travel bubble, Canberra Airport boss Stephen Byron says.

Frustrated at state border closures and the shutdown of international aviation, Mr Byron has called for Australian citizens to be allowed to fly home from New Zealand without undergoing 14 days’ hotel quarantine.
