Heat ‘blob’ to test green-era energy grid
A massive blob of extreme heat that began in South Australia and is forecast to drive temperatures in NSW and northern Victoria towards 40 degrees this weekend is being described as the first serious test of the eastern energy market’s resilience after four years of benign summers.
Coming after years of coal station closures and the slower-than-needed rollout of renewables and transmission capacity, the heat surge on Friday prompted the energy market regulator to call on generators to provide additional supply.
