‘Give us a chance’: More visas not enough to fix skills crisis

In 2010, Muhammad Ahsan Siddiqi migrated to Australia from Karachi in Pakistan to build a new life in what he calls “a very good country”.
Siddiqi, then a 47-year-old civil engineer, was granted a skills visa and moved with his wife and two children to Sydney’s western suburbs in the hope of quickly finding work in a profession that has long been in demand but short on supply.
