Thousands gather in Canberra to protest vaccine mandates
Protests against vaccine mandates are continuing in Canberra, with thousands taking to the streets and blocking roads.
Speaking in Sydney earlier today Morrison said the government has only supported mandates for aged care workers, disability workers and those who are working on high-risk environments.
“All other mandates that relate to vaccines have been imposed unilaterally by state governments. They have not been put in place by the Commonwealth government,” he said.
“In fact, the Commonwealth government cannot impose such a mandate.
“But it is a free country, and they have their right to protest, but I would ask them to do it with respect, particularly for their fellow Australians and the police that will be there, seeking to make sure it is a safe environment for everybody.”
Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese said the rallies were not going to gain widespread support and told demonstrators to “go home”.
The Convoy to Canberra protesters have been joined by One Nation leader Pauline Hanson.
