Former Nationals leader John Anderson has failed in his bid to re-enter federal politics after being beaten for Senate preselection by former party director Ross Cadell.

Mr Cadell, who was once president of the NSW Young Liberals, beat off five rivals, including Mr Anderson, for what will be the second spot on the NSW joint ticket between the Liberals and the Nationals.
