When Anthony Albanese delivered his historic Garma Festival address a year ago this weekend, the new prime minister called an Indigenous Voice to federal parliament “a simple but momentous change”.

Announcing the first vote to amend the Constitution in 25 years, Albanese kept faith with the architects of the Uluru Statement from the Heart, and made good on a promise to hold a referendum to allow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to give advice on policies affecting their lives.
