Like Southern Cross tattoos, ads exhorting us to eat lamb and Chinese-made Australian flag bikinis and bucket hats, the culture war over Australia Day is an indelible part of January 26.

And less than a fortnight out from the national birthday, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton leapt out of the campaign trenches to declare he would force local councils to hold citizenship ceremonies on that date.
