In the opposition leader’s populist pitch to bring down house prices, there is little recognition of the role of migrants in filling acute skills shortages across the economy.
The most disappointing element of Peter Dutton’s migration crackdown is not that it’s a populist ploy.
It’s not the “we’re closed” message it sends to the globe. It’s not even the backhanded swipe at big business, designed to stoke the far-right fringe who believe chief executives are the worst purveyors of woke.
