Daily doom prompts politicians to promise miracles

No wonder we think governments aren’t as good as they used to be when hyperbolic media reporting about almost every event is fostering expectations that can never be met.

In the month since the last election, many have lamented that the politicians of today are not as good as they once were.

I spoke at the Robert Menzies Institute in Melbourne recently with the writer Troy Bramston about Robert Menzies and Bob Hawke, and underlying our presentations and the audience’s engagement was an assumption that our recent prime ministers have been political minnows compared with those two great men.
