Former prime minister Scott Morrison has mounted a strident defence of his government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, freely admitting that while the response was far from perfect, Australia has one of the lowest fatality rates, highest vaccination rates and strongest economic performance of any developed country.

But confusion among the public as to why the Commonwealth could not just override the states hurt him and his government politically. Taking a “hit for the mission” was the price he had to pay.
