Recap what has happened today
We've had rolling updates from Queensland, NSW and Victoria today.
The states have tightened quarantine protocols in response to the emergence of more contagious strains of the virus, which are expected to become dominant.
Anyone with the more contagious variant will need to be symptom free for 14 days (instead of 10 days that was required for mild cases) and return a negative exit test before being released.
Follow-up testing of people with the new variants, after they have cleared quarantine, have triggered more alerts for people to get tested in NSW and Queensland.
Here's the other key news:
Queensland
- There were no new cases overnight after nearly 15,000 tests.
- The 91 contacts of the cleaner who triggered the Brisbane lockdown have all returned negative tests.
- Follow-up testing has triggered an alert for people on a Jetstar flight and in Maleny. Passengers who flew into Brisbane on a Jetstar flight JQ570 from Melbourne that arrived at 11pm on January 5 are being urged to be tested. That's because a woman who was infected with the UK variant but had completed hotel quarantine was on that flight. She has since returned a positive test. The woman is staying in Maleny and people there are warned to watch for any symptoms. Authorities said the risk of anyone being exposed was low. "The risk is extremely low - very, very low - because she is right at the end of her potential infectious period. With a normal variant we would not be at all concerned," Dr Jeanette Young said.
NSW
- NSW reported one new local case linked to the Berala cluster after over 25,600 tests in the 24 hours to 8pm. There were five new cases in hotel quarantine.
- Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant called for a "real push" to increase testing in western Sydney and in Ulladulla where sewage testing has detected the virus.
- Follow-up testing has triggered an alert for venues in several new venues in Burwood in Sydney’s inner west including Artisaint Café, Bing Lee and Burwood Westfield. They were visited by a woman who was released from quarantine on January 4 but showed remnants of the UK virus in follow-up testing.
Victoria
- Victoria reported zero local cases for the third day in a row, after over 28,000 tests.
