Why Coles and Woolies are a challenge for competition policy

Outgoing Productivity Commission chairman Michael Brennan has urged caution in overhauling competition policy, warning simplistic solutions could stymie productivity or leave consumers worse off.
Responding to whether a strong profit jump in Woolworths’ supermarket division and strong earnings from Coles were the sign of a well-functioning sector, Mr Brennan said policymakers faced a dilemma.
