Opposition Leader Peter Dutton will escalate the climate wars on Wednesday by announcing site plans for up to seven government-owned nuclear power plants around the nation.

The long-awaited announcement, approved on Tuesday night by the shadow cabinet and to be rubber-stamped by a full meeting of the Coalition party room to be held via teleconference at 8.30am AEST on Wednesday, will enshrine energy as a core battleground of the next election.
