China retreats from Pacific aid as debt fears rise

China’s aid spending in the Pacific went backwards in 2020, a new analysis finds, despite the region as a whole receiving a record amount from donor countries to help buffer small island nations from the worst of the pandemic.

But there are warnings the Pacific could be heading to unsustainable debt levels, with the share of lending ramping up in lieu of grants.
