Fires engulf Australia as temperatures soar

Temperatures will remain unusually high in almost every part of Australia through to December 29, worsening conditions for bushfires that were burning across every state in the week before Christmas.
The weather bureau forecast an 80 per cent likelihood that maximum temperatures will exceed the median in the last weeks of 2019, except in parts of southern Victoria, north-east Western Australia, and Tasmania.
