Cashless debit card to be wound up from September
More than 17,300 welfare recipients will be transitioned off the Coalition’s cashless debit card from September, with Labor’s legislation to wind up the controversial scheme due to be introduced to parliament on Wednesday.
Labor pledged to end use of the cards in regional and Indigenous communities before the May election, ending income sequestration rules designed to stop welfare recipients from spending welfare benefits on alcohol and gambling.
