Can Labor stop Trump’s tariff assault on Australia?

The PM faces the daunting task of advocating for Australia’s national economic interests while ensuring the nation doesn’t end up dancing to Trump’s tune.

Donald Trump’s decision to double tariffs on steel imports to 50 per cent puts Australia back on the front line of the escalating global trade war, which has already soured America’s relations with trading partners and roiled global markets.

Australian steel and aluminium producers sell approximately 10 per cent of their output to the US, and account for 0.5 per cent of total exports to America. Australian producers sold more than $800 million worth of iron, steel and aluminium to the United States in 2024.
