Revenue from the Petroleum Resources Rent Tax more than doubled from $786 million in 2020-21 to $1.65 billion last year, and is budgeted to show a further 45 per cent increase this financial year to $2.4 billion, Treasurer Jim Chalmers told parliament on Tuesday.
Dr Chalmers, who will release the final budget outcome for 2021-22 on Wednesday, said the boost in PRRT revenue underscored that spiralling world energy prices had contributed to the substantial improvement to the deficit, but insisted the lift was temporary.
