Blindsided bureaucrats sought outside legal advice on ghost portfolios

The Department of Industry was so blindsided by Scott Morrison’s move to appoint himself over former minister Keith Pitt as the key decision-maker on a politically sensitive offshore gas project that officials sought their own legal advice.

Secretary of the Department of Industry, Science and Resources Megan Quinn and other senior bureaucrats revealed to a Senate estimates hearing late on Thursday night that their predecessors under the former Coalition government sought advice independent of the prime minister’s department.
