Former prime minister John Howard has criticised President Joe Biden over the United States’ chaotic departure from Afghanistan that allowed the Taliban to overthrow the government, saying he did not believe it was necessary for all military personnel to be withdrawn.

Mr Howard also told The Australian Financial Review he stood by his decision to order Australian troops twice into combat in Afghanistan, as the Morrison government successfully completed the first of “many” rescue flights from Kabul.
