  • China has released Cheng Lei, an Australian journalist who had been held in jail for three years in an apparent case of hostage diplomacy.
  • Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced that Australians stranded in Israel can register for a seat on assisted repatriation flights that will begin flying on Friday from Ben Gurion International Airport to London.
  • Foreign Minister Penny Wong has branded the Hamas attacks “barbaric” and “abhorrent”. Wong told the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce: “We remain as steadfast and unwavering as ever in our support for Israel.”

  • Canberra had earlier confirmed a 66-year-old Australian, Galit Carbone, was executed by militants on Saturday at her home near the Gaza Strip,

  • The Israeli military said dozens of its fighter jets struck more than 200 targets overnight in a neighbourhood of Gaza City.
  • Gaza’s health ministry said at least 900 people have been killed and 4600 wounded in the crowded coastal enclave. Israeli public broadcaster Kan reported the weekend death toll had reached 1200.
  • Israel has called up 360,000 reservists to fight in the war – the largest mobilisation since the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
  • The Palestinian Foreign Ministry said Israeli strikes had destroyed more than 22,600 residential units and 10 health facilities and damaged 48 schools.
  • Two members of Hamas’ political office were killed in an air strike in Khan Younis, a Hamas official said. They were the first senior Hamas members killed since Israel began its retaliation.
  • On Israel’s northern border, rockets were fired from southern Lebanon towards Israel, prompting Israeli shelling in return. The exchange signalled the prospect that the violence could lead to a wider war.
  • A pro-Palestinian rally has not been authorised to go ahead in Sydney on Sunday, NSW Police said, as authorities launch an operation in response to a surge in protest activity following Hamas’ deadly incursion into Israel.
