The Howard government viewed the deadly Bali bombings as more serious for Australia’s national security than the 9/11 attacks, and raced to boost funding for intelligence agencies, former minister Amanda Vanstone says.

The largest loss of Australian lives in a terrorism incident, the October 2002 bombings at popular nightspots in Bali killed 202 people, including 88 Australians.
