Extending the timeframe for politicians to remain in power has widespread support from government, business and unions. It’s voters that need to be convinced.
The Albanese government was barely 18 months into its first term when it began scrambling to prepare for the next election.
Stung by a heavy defeat in last year’s referendum for an Indigenous Voice to parliament, the government needed to quickly win back the “middle Australia” voters who had deserted it in the belief it had not been sufficiently focused on the cost-of-living crisis.
