Australia’s code war cut-out pass against China in the Pacific

Backing both sides appears to be something the country will now have to do to avoid getting caught in the crossfire between union and league.

Countering China’s efforts to increase its presence and influence in Pacific Island nations was a foreign policy priority during Labor’s first term in office.

Canberra was caught napping when (on the watches of former Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Foreign Minister Marise Payne) news broke of the Solomon Islands agreeing to a security pact with Beijing in March 2022.
