• ‘Fresh evidence’ on YouTube harms informed ban, says Wells: Minister for Communications Anika Wells said new evidence from the eSafety Commissioner showing the online harm children are experiencing on YouTube informed the government’s decision to backflip on its planned exemption for the Google-owned platform in its social media ban for under-16s.

• Disgraced state MP jailed after sex abuse convictions: Kiama MP Gareth Ward, 44, has been escorted behind bars days after he was found guilty of sexually abusing two young men. Ward was found guilty earlier in July by a NSW District Court jury of one sexual intercourse without consent and three indecent assault charges.
• Australian-made rocket fails to launch: A rocket built by Australian start-up Gilmour Space had insufficient thrust to reach orbit after being launched from the purpose-built pad outside the north Queensland town of Bowen this morning.

• UK to recognise Palestine by September unless Israel stops war: Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the UK would formally recognise a Palestinian state by the time of the United Nations General Assembly in September if Israel does not stop its war in Gaza.
