Australia needs a world-beating vaccine rollout now
Victoria’s latest outbreak exposes the costs of Australia’s slow vaccine take-up and offers the Prime Minister an easy political win if he can fix the problem.
Mongolia, Zimbabwe, Nepal, India, Kazakhstan, Myanmar and Cambodia are among more than 90 countries that have one thing in common. They’re outpacing Australia’s vaccination rollout. Some are miles ahead.
Israel is the world’s gold standard with 57 per cent of its population “fully” vaccinated. The US – which last year stood out among developed countries for its mishandling of the pandemic – is close behind with 40 per cent. After losing control last year, they’ve recovered and administered an extraordinary 290 million doses so far.
