Joint military exercises between Australian and Japan could escalate within a year after Scott Morrison and his Japanese counterpart Yoshihide Suga reached in-principle agreement on a two-way defence treaty in Tokyo on Tuesday night.
The agreement, which one official said would see Japan ‘'getting off the bench'’ to contribute to and shape the regional security order, was reached after six years of negotiation.
