Why young people embrace the emotion of Anzac Day

It’s 109 years since Australian and New Zealand soldiers climbed the steep, craggy hills at Gallipoli, but the day has a unique hold on the nation’s soul and imagination.

On the green verge overlooking Sydney’s Bondi Beach, 8000 young people gather at dawn.

As the surf rolls in on Anzac Day, they are quiet and respectful during speeches, prayers, wreath laying, the singing of the New Zealand and Australian national anthems, and a trumpeter playing the Last Post.
