Aged care overhaul to push more cost onto self-funded retirees
The wealthiest retirees will pay up to $13,400 a year extra for residential care under a user-pays overhaul of the aged care funding system that was agreed by the government and opposition to help contain ballooning budget costs.
Those same retirees, should they instead receive care in their homes, will be required to pay up to 80 per cent of everyday living costs such as cleaning, gardening and food, and 50 per cent of so-called independence costs, which include services such as transport.
An earlier version of this article said wealthy retirees would pay up to $9,100 a year extra for residential care, but the figure has been changed to $13,400 in line with government documents.
