A time for change: Gough Whitlam’s election win, 50 years on
There was a revolutionary flavour to the Whitlam era, with its radical departure from the past and its abrupt demise.
In 1970, crack Harvard MBA graduate Bill Ferris launched the local venture capital industry. One early VC investment was Spectrum, which pioneered focus group-based market research in Australia.
Spectrum’s analysis of voters’ comments in the two years before the 1972 federal election confirmed that “whatever the issue on the table, and whatever the gender or age, the overwhelming response was “it’s time for change”, Ferris recalls.
