The historic Gingin gasfield in the Perth Basin of WA could be back in production later this year after its new owner, Empire Oil and Gas NL, spudded its first well on the weekend.

Empire, which is joined in the venture by the giant multinational CalEnergy Inc, is sinking the $5 million well to tap cheap gas to sell into the deregulated Western Australian market and has received firm offers from several potential customers.
