Election will decide next High Court chief justice

The looming federal election will not only decide who will lead the nation, it will also decide who is the next chief justice of the High Court.
There will be two retirements during the 47th parliament – Justice Patrick Keane in October 2022 and Chief Justice Susan Kiefel in January 2024 – and the Labor and Liberal parties are a long way apart in their thinking, especially on Chief Justice Kiefel’s successor.
