Bob Carr’s genocide claims are dangerous for social cohesion

The firebombing of a Melbourne synagogue, violent threats to Jewish Australians and the vandalism of Jewish property show that such language has real-world consequences.

Former NSW premier and foreign minister Bob Carr’s assertion that Israel’s conduct in Gaza resembles some of the deadliest episodes of the 20th century, from the Warsaw Ghetto to Stalin’s action in Ukraine and Mao’s Great Leap Forward, is not only wrong but dangerous.

It risks further inflaming community tensions over the conflict in Gaza rather than advancing serious political debate.
