Taxation statistics compiled by the Australian Bureau of Statistics released last week were overshadowed by the Consumer Price Index release on the same day.

But the tax revenue figures were quite startling in a way that weakens the case for governments to hunt for more revenue in forthcoming federal and state budgets.
