How Australia’s financial gorilla was born
Wage restraint under the Hawke government came at the price of a national super system – and became one of the most important stories in the history of The Australian Financial Review.
On Thursday, September 5, 1985, the page one splash in The Australian Financial Review carried a banner across the top that read: “Accord … but costly” and below that “ACTU’s national superannuation clue.”
Despite the cautious headline, this splash was one of the most important stories in the history of the newspaper, announcing the start of industry superannuation – the gorilla that would change the nation.
