Tutoring in Australia is a billion-dollar industry

One in seven school children will be tutored at some time during their lives, yet tutors are not required to train before they take on the role.

Australia, like much of the developed world, has embraced private tutoring as a way to help children secure places at the schools and universities their parents believe most likely to confer long-term benefits.

Mohan Dhall, chief executive of the Australian Tutoring Association, says there are an estimated 4000 tutoring businesses in Australia, 500 of which belong to the peak body he heads.
