To escape the extreme pressure of working on a COVID-19 vaccine in her Oxford laboratory, Catherine Green took a couple of days off last year and drove to a remote spot in Wales where she pitched a small tent next to a mountain stream, out of reach of phones.

But there was a pizza van not too far away and while she and her nine-year-old daughter waited for their order, she overheard a conversation about the Oxford vaccine.
