Hatred of Trump is a roadblock to reopening

International experts agree harsh lockdowns are harmful and unnecessary. But because Donald Trump supports this view, politics is preventing the science becoming policy in the US.

US President Donald Trump is the most prominent example the world has of how top-notch healthcare can reduce the novel coronavirus from a plague to a regular flu. This is bad news for efforts to manage the virus and avoid future lockdowns.

Science being science, it is unlikely we will ever see a perfect consensus on the best way to manage COVID-19 until a vaccine becomes available.
