Inside the Democrats’ fight over Biden
Hosting the NATO summit was supposed to help the US president demonstrate unity within the Democratic Party. But his party is tearing itself apart over whether he should stay in the election race.
Jennifer HewettColumnistWashington | In the solemnity of the US Senate chamber, Democratic majority leader Chuck Schumer is using his morning opening address to warn how “the Trump Manifesto” threatens US democracy and acceptable behaviour.
“That this is happening in America is bone chilling,” he tells a near-empty chamber, arguing that Donald Trump should not be allowed “within 10 miles of the White House”. He doesn’t mention the Senate and House meetings of Democrats frantically arguing about whether Joe Biden should pull out of the race.
