American politics may be in failing health but the American economy is thriving – no matter how much Donald Trump talks about a country in decline and the need to “rescue” the economy.

The latest quarterly GDP figures show the US economy expanding at a 2.8 per cent annual rate, driven by strong consumer spending and business investment with low unemployment and rising real wages.
