Could Trump’s tariffs decouple Europe from China, too?

The levies may trigger a strategic diversion of Chinese exports from America to the EU, eventually compelling European governments to respond with their own trade barriers.

There is a familiar tendency among foreign observers to view Donald Trump’s trade policy as erratic and impulsive. Yet in strategic terms, his proposed blanket tariff on Chinese goods may have more coherence and potential impact than many realise.

Trump’s rhetoric is typically zero-sum: tariffs to punish Beijing, protect American workers, save the US rust belt, and rebalance trade deficits.
