Call out Putinesque India
It should go without saying, but Narendra Modi’s mystical one-world vision of India’s global leadership should not include extra-judicial killings of members of the Indian diaspora living in foreign lands.
The alleged Putinesque murder by Indian agents of a Sikh separatist on Canadian soil, if true, will give support to those sceptics who say the rule of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has more in common with the authoritarianism of Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping than with the democratic West that is seeking to recruit traditionally non-aligned India to help counter China and Russia.
Caution needs to be exercised before trying to draw parallels between Russia’s treatment of Ukraine or China’s treatment of the Uighurs and India’s complex internal politics.
