The first visit to Australia by a Chinese premier since 2017 was always going to summon reminders about the preceding period of tensions in the relationship.
As well as concerns about China’s ongoing sabre-rattling over Taiwan and in the South China Sea, and the suspended death sentence Beijing has meted out to Australian citizen Yang Hengjun.
