When Guy Debelle was approached early this year by his university friend and former banker Andrew Hagger about joining Fortescue Future Industries, the Reserve Bank of Australia deputy governor faced his toughest career decision.

Hagger is the chief executive of Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) founder Andrew Forrest’s philanthropy arm, Minderoo Foundation, and the Forrest family’s investment vehicle, Tattarang.
