A Victorian-led plan to use imported LNG to avoid damaging near-term gas shortfalls is in limbo after state and federal energy ministers agreed to delay their deadline for signing off on the critical proposal.
The plan would allow Australia’s energy market operator to underwrite the construction of new import terminals to meet short-term gas supply needs, which experts say may be required to stave off shortfalls and massive nationwide price spikes as soon as 2028.
