Dutton nuclear policy sell fails to add up the cost

Coalition leader Peter Dutton is selling nuclear power as the solution to arguably the single biggest challenge and opportunity facing Australia: replacing fossil fuels with clean power in a way that establishes us as a renewable energy superpower and ensures we meet our emissions reductions obligations.

Mr Dutton boldly claims that nuclear is “the only plan for cheaper, cleaner, and consistent energy” even though the vast majority of energy experts have questioned whether broad economics and timing assumptions of this plan will stack up. The key word here is “broad” because the opposition leader is yet to provide voters with much in the way of detail about how he will achieve his nuclear visions.
