China’s “predatory” behaviour to dominate critical minerals justifies the Albanese government providing taxpayer support for the mining of rare earths and other vital commodities the world needs, Treasury secretary Steven Kennedy has declared.

His conditional backing for “time limited” production tax credits for critical mineral processing was met with a warning from one of Australia’s top China experts that the government would need to be willing to provide subsidies for “decades”.
