Meg Rutledge lay in bed listening to the rain belt the roof of her family’s pastoral homestead in south-west Queensland.

Fearing they were about to be inundated after days of filthy weather, she opened the map feature on the Bureau of Meteorology’s mobile app to check the intensity of the storm in her region, near Quilpie, and where it was going.
