Victoria shuts the door too late

Businesses are closing as the entire state of Victoria enters an even tougher lockdown from Wednesday night. Yet is it only now moving to stop people with the virus leaving their homes for exercise or other purposes.

Whoop dee doo. Daniel Andrews has announced a $5000 fine for Victorians who have tested positive for the virus but aren’t at home when authorities come calling. Not $5000 the first time around, mind you, just the second or subsequent times that individuals breach the rules.

Presumably the size of the new potential fine will distract attention from the extent of the state’s failure to enforce previous regulations requiring people to self-isolate if they have the coronavirus.
