Labor’s controversial decision to put $1.5 billion in taxpayer funds into battery and solar panel manufacturing should be subject to a rigorous assessment to ensure the subsidies are genuinely in the national interest, the Productivity Commission says.

Grattan Institute energy expert Tony Wood warned that Australia was not going to create world-leading battery making and solar panel manufacturing industries, saying it was “nonsensical” to try and compete with China.
